Richard Heeps
Richard Heeps has been photographing hot rods, hot girls and Americana in the UK and the USA for over 10 years. His images capture the vibrancy of contemporary scenes inspired by 1940’s and 1950’s and they pay tribute to mid-century modern life, as it is today.
Born in 1965 in Cambridge, where he still works and lives, Richard has pursued an interest in colour photography through a variety of themes predominantly set within the East Anglian region.
Using traditional film and darkroom techniques the seductive, highly-saturated colours and sophisticated pictorial structures demonstrate a true love and empathy for the subject matter – be it cool, descriptive interiors, still life or landscape. His distinctive style pushes the limits of lens-based photography without the need for digital manipulation. All the work is hand-printed from negative as C-type prints in 'full frame' which gives the distinctive ragged edge, retro-look.
Richard Heeps came to prominence at a relatively young age with an exhibition at the Photographer’s Gallery in 1989. Since then, he has shown in a multitude of solo and group exhibitions, and has executed commissions for the Year of the Artist project and the Wicken Fen Natural Reserve. His books include: 'Thurrock - A Different Light', 'FAST - Feasting on the streets of London', 'Man's Ruin' and 'Rolled Out'.
