Based in Medway I have continued to develop my passion of colour and exploring colour through painting. Colour represents atmosphere and emotion, always draws me to a scene or ‘happening’ and this is what I respond to in the first instance. In 2005 – 2006 I had an art residency placement at Great Dixter House & Gardens, plants and gardens have a strong influence on the work. The fantastic, flamboyant gardens and colour combinations of the late Christopher Lloyd’s garden cannot fail to inspire and excite. This accumulated with an exhibition in the Benenden Hall. Another source of continuous inspiration and fascination is India and travel through Asia, exploring street life, the day-to-day scenarios of everyday life and how colour is used in different cultures and the significance of this in everyday occurrences. The paintings initially were more abstract and structural in approach but since an art residency at the Sanskriti Foundation in Delhi in 2008 funded by Arts Council England, I introduced elements of objects and still life through exploring Indian miniature paintings and the work of New Zealand artist Frances Hodgkins who places still life within the context of landscape. My ongoing relationship with painting is to produce works where objects or shapes almost fall from the painting, the canvas exuding something sumptuous, vibrant and awakening the senses. Studies include Central St Martins College of Art & Design, the Facultat de Belles Artes, Barcelona and a postgraduate Diploma in Garden Design at the Museum of Garden History, London.
